Water Based Inks Are Made Of Plastic
Is plastisol better for the environment than water-based inks?
Let's consider something most people never stop to think about: plastisol, the ink almost everyone assumes is the worse choice for the environment, might be the better one. Running a press every day gives a different picture than the one most people start with.
Water-based ink isn't just water. The pigment needs a binder to hold onto the garment once it's cured, and that binder is usually an acrylic or polyurethane resin, a synthetic polymer, chemically close to plastic itself. Water is the carrier, not the whole ink. The "plastic vs. not plastic" framing a lot of people use to choose between the two doesn't hold up the way it's marketed.
Then there's what it takes to cure each one. Plastisol reaches its cure temperature briefly and it's done, a lower heat that keeps the garment's hand and color intact. Water-based ink needs that heat held in place until every bit of water has fully evaporated out of the print, a longer dwell time, a higher temperature, a dryer working harder the whole way through. More energy, every single run.

It doesn't stop at curing either. Water is running through the entire process just to keep water-based ink alive on press, misting the screen, watching for fans or breezes, keeping ink topped up so it doesn't dry mid-run. That's machinery and attention plastisol never needs. Plastisol sits in the screen as it was left, no water, no misting, no extra equipment standing by just to keep the ink workable.
Waste is where the difference gets real. Plastisol doesn't dry. Left in a screen, left in the bucket, doesn't matter, it stays workable indefinitely. Whatever doesn't get used on a job goes back in the container and gets used on the next one. Water-based ink doesn't offer that. Left in an open screen too long during a print run, it dries and clogs the mesh. Unused ink has a shelf life, and once it's past that window it's not printable, it's just waste. It can grow mold sitting in a bucket, water, pigment, and organic binder with nothing keeping it inert. That's why most water-based inks are formulated with a formaldehyde-releasing preservative in the first place, to fight the mold and bacteria the water invites. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen. Plastisol never needs a preservative, because it never gives mold anything to grow on.
None of this makes plastisol some kind of miracle material. It still deserves to be handled and disposed of the right way, same as anything else in the shop. But once you weigh it out, less energy to cure it, less of it wasted, less water being used, and ink that stays usable for the life of the studio instead of the life of a bucket, the case for plastisol being the better environmental choice holds up better than the case against it.
With all of this considered, we still use water-based ink on some of the specialty work we do. We're not anti water-based, we're not anti anything, we just ask that people consider the options in front of them and make an informed decision instead of assuming one is automatically the responsible choice just cause one has water in its name.
